Week 3: Dairy, Grains and Gravy Trains

So according to strict Paleo followers, dairy is a bit of a no-no. Frankly, I am not sure if I can live without it. I can deal with giving up on the wheat, and cutting down drastically on my other grains and legumes (rice, beans etc etc.) but I have a hard time giving up my milk, cheeses and other dairy products. I did however, except when I make my homemade Caesar salad dressing, have given up mostly on the yogurt. It wasn't that much of a switch to cut it out.

I drink about a glass of 1% milk a day and have that with my one cup of coffee in the morning (sometimes two). I usually keep a mindful watch on cheese intake, but I have those cravings when I want to just slice off a bit off the block and I do indulge that craving every now and then. Although I have pretty much given up on most things wheat, I do miss the smell of a nice grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough, and even more so, the taste of it. But I don't find myself  'crying' over it either.

During these past holidays, I did indulge in one wheat based dish, which was my apple-infused stuffing that I made for Christmas dinner at my parents' house. However, instead of eating mashed potatoes, I had a little sweet potatoe, and squash to fill those voids.  I opted for more cranberry sauce over turkey gravy to stay away from the glutens in the thickening agent.

Although I am not as strict about 'staying within the rules' of the Paleo diet, I do find myself being far more conscious about the little ingredients in our food that make the biggest differences. If I can find a way to make a healthier alternative for it, then I will. I don't see the point of putting something concocted in a science lab and then passed off as 'food' into my body and the bodies of my family if I can get the real deal and cook it into something better myself.

So I have survived the holidays with actually losing 7lbs, made my first spaghetti with having squash as my 'pasta' instead of the wheat pasta, and incorporated yoga into my exercise regimen.  I do have more energy than I did when I was eating a lot of grains (whole wheat or not) and finding myself wanting to be more active with my recreation time.

So far, this has been a good change, and I honestly don't see much turning back to a 'progressive' diet plan.
