Step 1: Gluten for Punishment

About three weeks ago, I went on a girls' trip to Whistler with some old high school friends.  We had a great time, despite a little drama and unfortunate circumstance, at the beginning of the trip that caused one of our members to make a bee-line back home.  We were getting reacquainted and really getting to know each other more during our two days up there.

Although the main objective at first was to go out, drink a lot (not that it didn't happen) and party. The more the weekend progressed, the more the four of us realized that we're just not those types of girls anymore. We were women with families, careers, and a domestic lives and we were all happy with them.  We started discussing the type of food lifestyles we were living and I was beginning to realize that as of late I have been lenient in my taking of my family's food habits.

One of the ladies was living and eating a Primal (Paleo) lifestyle.  Although her family isn't fully into her ways of eating, she tries her best to incorporate her nutrition plan into their daily meals.  I was intrigued about how she has kept herself fit, healthy (which is the most important aspect) and energetic at our ages. We ranged from 35-37 years of age in the group.  She gave us an explanation that many of us have been mis-informed from the 'health food' business about what is good for you.

Primal Eating Philosophy is one of going back to eating fresh and natural foods, as much as possible. I am hoping for the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson for Christmas so I can get more in-depth to what it means to eat Primal. My understanding was that you eat food in their basic forms, such as meats, fish/seafood, veggies, fruit and nuts. It is to also stay away from tubers (potatoes etc) vegetables as much as possible but get your carbohydrates from fruits and veggies as much as possible.

I decided that I was going to try going Primal, one step at a time.  I decided to cut wheat products out of my daily diet. It's been about a week and half since I have done such a thing and in all honesty, it's helped out a lot. No more sandwiches, no more flour tortillas, no more garlic bread and no more pastas.  Complex of simple carbohydrates from wheat and other gluten products are cut out drastically. I feel more energized, and do feel some changes in my body as I am weeding out some things in my diet.

I am going to do this for a few weeks straight and see what difference it will make in my body and add to my progress by regressing in the amounts of processed foods I take in.  I am also trying to redefine my workout regimen and cut down the time I spend in the gym and spark up the intensity of my workouts.

I know I will make mistakes and I know I will fall off the wagon from time to time, but it's important that I document my journey and update my progress and 'clean' the recipe books I have in my home to make them more friendly to my new ways of eating Primal.  Wish me luck, and I hope you enjoy sharing my journey.

Regress to progress.
